RE: Just wondering??

so I guess I was really wondering about the medical reasons for altering my males. in the past, we have mostly dealt with female dogs and have had them altered, for obvious reasons.
What are the "obvious" reasons for having a female spayed? Just because females go into heat, which can be messy?
Both our males have been neutered. Our reasons had little to do with getting a girl pregnant, and everything to do with their well-being and health, physically and mentally.
A neutered male has no hormonal urges -- might be less agressive with other dogs, might not feel so much need to compete with other males (over anything), might not feel the need the mark so much, might not be driven to meet the girl next door, etc. Just makes him a more pleasant fellow and he doesn't really know the difference, one way or the other.
Aside from the cost, why NOT have your dogs neutered? What are the advantages to keeping them intact?

RE: Vista vs; XP

Unfortunately, I'm serious. I still have unopened boxes of 5 1/4" floppies. Can you spell p-a-c-k-r-a-t ... ?

RE: Vista vs; XP

I finally had to give up on my IBM-XT, because I could no longer find any 5 ¼” floppy disks conveniently.
Oh jeez ... I still have boxes of Dysan floppies in boxes, cellophane wrapped no less! Maybe there is a market on e-bay after all!

RE: Tofino/Ucululet

Bad road? 18 km in 1.5 hours? that's an average of 12 km/h!
That does it ... definitely our kind of road!! Despite Gary's insistence that we won't like it, we'll have to try it :B just because of the road.

RE: pilot blowing out on fridge

The Dometic fridge in our 1992 fiver had a pilot light. We usually had to manually light it, as the "ignitor" didn't like to work in the damp.
And, it would also blow out on windy days while we were camped, even though it was well protected.
That fridge did not spark on its own ... one had to press one button to start the flow of propane and another button to spark the ignitor.

Yes, I've heard about Torquart Bay. The start of the road looks ominous enough. Maybe we'll give it a try this summer, before our annual trip north.

RE: shotgun carry

Sporting good & outdoor stores ...
The pen type would fit nicely in Gary's shirt pocket and leave his hands free for the beer and firewood.
Text info about bear bangers here ...
http://www.ursusinternational.org/en/bangers.html
There's lots of YouTube videos showing how they work. I didn't create a link to any of the videos as most have some explicit language. Didn't want to offend anyone.
Basically, a bearbanger sounds like a shotgun going off, and if you direct the flare correctly (in front of the bear) it scares the daylights out of them and the bear takes off, fast. However, you don't want to have the bang go off on the far side of the bear, 'cause it would likely scare the bear towards you.

RE: shotgun carry

Bear bangers can be effective. Sound like a gun and usually scare the bear away. Only had one brazen grizzly that wanted to investigate more after a couple of bear bangers were set off. It eventually took a helicopter to drive him into the bush.
I think bear bangers are more common in Canada than in the US?

RE: SNOW in Vancouver - EEEEEEK!

Sorry, we have enough of our own on south Vancouver Island. Need 4x4 and chains to get in and out of our driveway.
Got more snow last night. Some light flurries today. AND the Weather Network has a big red screen warning of more snow tonight! Enough already.
Maybe if we all do some rain dances ... I'll take the liquid stuff over this any day. As they say, you don't need to shovel it! Also, it's easier to camp in the rain ...

RE: Propane on or off?

Off.
Don't agree with the statements that it's no riskier to travel with it on. If it was without risk, why do 'they' require the propane be shut off on ferries and in tunnels?
A couple of summers ago a RV went up in flames at a local rest area. And a few summers ago a TT went up in flames at a local resort, due to a propane leak around the stove.
If everything is working well, then maybe no issues. BUT, if there is a leak in the system somewhere, then there's greater risk.
Does everyone who travels with their propane on have their propane system tested every year for leaks, and have their propane appliances checked for proper operation?

RE: HELP! Adding A Wireless Connection To The Stick House

Here is a Print Server to share your printer on the network.
Thanx, but I REALLY want the whazamatic new printer, for printing photos up to 13" wide and 44" long.
I'll be happy and DH will be happy. Only issue is the whazamatic printer is a bit large to fit in the RV, so might have to give up some cupboard space!

RE: HELP! Adding A Wireless Connection To The Stick House

Linksys has been working well for me. I have similar to what you are wanting ... desktop PC hardwired in and a wireless laptop.
Only issue is the printer isn't networkable. However, DH wants to do more printing from the laptop. Maybe I'll just buy the new whazamatic printer I've had my eye on (also not networkable) for the desktop and have the old printer available for him to plug into.

RE: shotgun carry

This morning I asked DH the difference between a pistol and handgun. He pondered a bit and thought the same as me, a pistol is a handgun. Glad to see someone else thought the same.
Handguns are either restricted or prohibited weapons in Canada, depending on the type of handgun. It is possible to transport a restricted handgun through Canada, with pre-approval from another level of bureaucracy (border agent cannot approve at the border crossing). However, prohibited handguns are, well, of course, prohibited in Canada.
See the site below for more info regarding prohibited vs. restricted.
Also, according to this gov't of Canada website, the declaration is $25 for 60 days. http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/factsheets/visitin_e.asp

RE: Anyone driven teh AlCAN within the last week or two??

Check http://images.drivebc.ca/bchighwaycam/pages/index.html for the webcams on BC roads & highways. There are several webcams on Hwy 97 in Northern BC, which is the Alaska Highway. Road conditions & advisories are also posted there.
The Yukon gov't has its road conditions posted at http://www.511yukon.ca/

RE: SNOW in Vancouver - EEEEEEK!

Will this snow ever clear away? Another 4" overnight on south Vancouver Island, to freshen up the 24" that still remains from the last snowfalls.
I think it is all Little Kopit's fault. She said it isn't winter unless there is snow on the ground for at least 10 days during 3 different months.
Well, we had snow on the ground for 10 days in December. And, without a doubt we'll have snow here for at least 10 days in January. Last year we had snow in March and April, so I'm optimistic that south Vancouver Island will officially have "winter" this year.

Thanks for that, Frank.
It would be a useful piece of info and I think many will benefit from the resource. Might also be useful to include a bit of info about requirements for Canadians wishing to take firearms into the US.
